A Cautionary Tale About Long-Term Disability Insurance

You need it even if you think you’ll never use it

If employed, you likely have short-term and long-term disability insurance through your employer. And you likely haven’t paid much attention to this benefit. Most of us don’t…until we need it.

In September 2020, my husband lost his taste and smell. We knew what the Covid test confirmed.

His immediate symptoms were mild, and he seemed to come through the infection fine. Until he tried to return to work and a wall of fatigue like a tsunami pushed him back to bed.

His employer suggested FMLA and short-term disability to protect his job and wages, and we felt confident he would be well enough to return to work after those benefits expired.

There wasn’t a name for Long Covid yet, but we would become all too familiar with that term very soon!
