A Fragment of Forever

Your hand finds mine

in the darkness that I have made

of our room, with its curtains

and booming sound machine.

I tell myself it helps you sleep,

my presence beside you as we

approach the question of the years

that we must begin between us.

It worries me, the trust with which

you hold my hand so tightly.

My fingers encircle your fist

which has somehow wound itself into a tight grip.

I am startled by how unflinching

your love and instinct prove to be.

Besides you, I am sometimes an imposter,

struggling to hold to an identity

beyond my existence.

Strangely enough, however, being with you

has also made me braver than

my pathetic self has ever been.

You make me want to exist,

more bright and more refined,

willing to conquer, and learn,

more than I have ever known.

In the love and the trust

you give me, as you lay your

head upon my shoulder,

I am unstoppable, untouchable

— a fragment of infinity, dazzling

itself in its quest for mundane existence.
