Once in a while, places of dreams become real. Entering Dismal Canyon was like descending into a land of elves and dwarves.

The walls ascend over 100 feet, covered in moss and flowers. A quiet river snakes through the middle of the grove, adding to the ethereal feeling. No matter how hot it is above, it is always cooler and pleasant down there.

The trail takes its wanderer through many passages. Sometimes, the river is crossed; other times, the trail merely kisses it. Eventually, the canyon widens into a small valley with loose trees and bowlders.

The dirt guide ends where it began. Ascending back into the real world is not sad because the canyon always leaves its peace for you to take.

I have encountered only a handful of people the times I have gone. Peaceful, quiet, and restorative, Dismal Canyon has become a way to retreat from today's hectic world.
