A Moving Experience. When heroes become villains and vice-versa

All through the nightmare of my move last month, among the few bright spots was the moving company selected to ship our belongings from Italy to the US. When so many service providers were letting us down or out-and-out betraying us, this mover was reliable, efficient, and completely professional. They were expensive but worth the cost (or so I thought) because they showed up on time and did exactly what they said they would do. They earned my trust.

But the opera ain’t over till the fat lady sings. We were supposed to hear from the US affiliate of our mover by the end of June for an update on our shipment whereabouts and timing. We were told by Italy that our goods would arrive in the Port of Baltimore on July 8. When we heard nothing, I began to phone and ping the affiliate. They were a different company from the one I had contracted with — and paid in full more than a month ago– in Italy.

At first the US contact didn’t answer the phone. Then the voicemail was full. Then the woman was supposedly on vacation. I reached out to Italy for assistance and was told that our container had arrived in the port of New York on July 12. After several more attempts to reach the contact by phone, the US rep replied on July 23 with the news that our stuff (34 cartons of clothes, shoes, household items, medical and financial…
