About Him— Brother Bhunru
Passion, Authenticity and Truth.
I’m not the greatest at talking about myself. So let’s switch things up and do it in the third person, why don’t we?
His name is Bantu, but his alias is Bhunru.
He is a 20-year-old dropout (edit: not anymore) who chose to explore his path.
He’s a mystery, even to himself at times, thinking “what is an interesting way to introduce yourself without being boring?”
Introducing himself into the world frightens him, but here’s his attempt:
He is a wanderer.
He’s wandered through life investigating modern existential quandaries:
Living a passionless life.
Having no faith in the divine.
Shrouded in insecurities.
For 20 years, he has looked outside of himself to find these answers.
Only now he has clarity.
And he wants to share this with you.
The end to all of your problems…
Start with you.
We will return to that later
Let’s explore a bit about his journey, shall we?
He was born in 2002, and raised by a single mother and a wide net of family supporting him.
Most of childhood can be summed up by three things: Anime, manga and video games.
Out of all the content he consumed, one touched his heart:
Dragon Ball.
He grew up on it, so much so that he developed an obsession with training and exercise.
Because he was the fat kid in the group, the stereotypical mama’s boy that played video games all day and smelt horrible.
So he got off his bed and hit the gym when he was 16.
He began counting his steps.
He portioned his meals.
He cranked out every last rep.
And finally…
He lost all of that baby fat.
Through years of training his body.
He packed muscle, a beard and an actual jawline.
He even got a modelling opportunity.
Once an impossibility, was now achievable for him.
So that’s where the story would usually end.
The fat boy turned into the muscle man.
But this brought no end to his troubles.
Far from. He became worse.
No matter how hard he tried, there was still this void inside of him that no amount of discipline and dedication could fix.
He thought that being fit and attractive would flip that switch and finally make him happy.
But it didn’t.
Not one bit.
At first, he filled the void with vices.
Hedonism was the path of least resistance for him.
And he indulged, for over three years, ignoring what was important.
He ignored his family.
His duty.
His God.
He ignored himself.
He was a troubled young man.
An insincere, suicidal, and depressed man.
Until, at 19 years old, he read a book.
The book “Ego is The Enemy” by Ryan Holiday made him evaluate the choices he made up till that moment.
At first, he was affronted by the suggestion that his ego was holding him back.
“How could it?” he thought, “My ego has gotten me this far.”
But it didn’t get him much.
It got him shallow praise and nothing more.
It made people hate him.
It caused nothing but a discontented and miserable existence.
For the first time in his life, there was clarity in the void.
His ego blinded him to the beauty of life.
The beauty of a mother caressing her new-born babe.
The beauty of the wind whistling through lush fields.
The beauty of the stars creating a moonlight tapestry.
The world’s love. God’s love.
Bhunru finally realised that he was a part of this world, and he had a duty to do good in it. And so, he relinquished his vices and vowed to himself to help others find their path.
There’s more to his story, but that is not important right now.
What’s important is his craft.
And most importantly, why he does it.
Through the lessons learned from his trials and tribulations, Bhunru is driven to impart the philosophy of Stoicism to others, hoping to light their path just as he found his.
Bhunru knows it won’t be an easy task.
He knows how much time and dedication it’ll take.
That’s why he knows that this is worth doing.
Now, as Bhunru, it’s his mission to find meaning through writing.
He can only hope that was he is saying makes sense.
