Filing an extension is a relatively easy process — but it’s absolutely necessary if you need more time to file your taxes. Here are some things you need to know before you request an extension.

- The last day to request an extension is April 15 and if the extension is accepted the new filing deadline is October 15.

- The extension is only for filing your return. — you still need to pay any taxes you owe by April 15
