On July 20th, team USA basketball played an exhibition game against South Sudan before their lead up to the Olympics. This team consists of Lebron James, Steph Curry, Anthony Davis, Jayson Tatum, etc.

South Sudan beat 11-time African champ Angola in last year’s World Cup to qualify for these Olympics, despite having first played an official game just seven years ago.

GDP (Gross Domestic Product) determines the prosperity of countries based on their economic health. Per capita GDP is calculated by dividing the GDP of a nation by its population. The GDP of the United States as of 2022 is $76,329. The GDP of South Sudan is $492 making it the poorest country in the world. Four. Hundred. Ninety. Two freaking dollars.

Team USA was favored in this game by 43 points. They won by 1. As the game progressed and it looked like South Sudan had a chance, I’m not gonna lie, I was pulling for them.

The importance of this game was more important to South Sudan than the US by a million miles. What’s a gold medal worth to South Sudan compared to Lebron? And if South Sudan plays Team USA again in the Olympics, I will pull for South Sudan. I’m a sucker for massive Cinderella stories. Sue me.
