Most people have very busy lives.

Our jobs. Some of us have kids. Or maybe elderly parents. Friendships. An uneaten dog or cat. All of which take up a lot of time and energy.

In most of our minds, that leaves little time to do things like exercise. Or cook healthy food instead of ordering DoorDash or grabbing fast food. Most of us think there isn’t any time to practice a hobby. Learn an instrument or new language, or how to paint.

And once we get past all those considerations and calculations, we’re convinced there’s even less time to do something that will help make society a more loving, fair, and equitable place.

We convince ourselves that one person can’t really change things anyway.

Pile on top of that the added fear that when we put ourselves out there, potentially shining a bright light on ourselves, we might create waves. That speaking up could have negative consequences for us. What if our friends get uncomfortable?

It’s better, we say internally, to go about our daily routines and business without making anyone uncomfortable.

Easy-peasy.

All that gives us, however, is a formula for failure to fix our nation’s racial issues.
