Writing for Self and Considering the Reader

I feel sorry for people who aren't writers.

They walk around the world weighed down by conflicts and distressful experiences.

They have no repository or a limited one at best to transfer their emotional response to a life filled with plot twists.

Whereas writers have the ability to take any experience, happy or sad, and can shout, "that's really good," about it.

What other vocation can you say that about?

Your sister called you an insulting name.

"That's really good," you holler at your sister as you madly write down the exchange in a notebook.

You got a flat tire.

"That's really good," you can say to yourself as you call the mechanic.

Each moment's lurch is fruitful for a compelling narrative.

Someone you were looking forward to seeing at lunch stood you up and forgot to call?

"That's really good," you can say as you attend to your rejection and paint a picture of an inconsiderate oaf.

And, then, to deepen the reflection, you can assert yourself and call to find out what the hell…
