We can define AI as “Artificial Intelligence is a branch of computer science that deals with developing intelligent machines which can behave like human, think like human, and has ability to take decisions by their own.”

History of AI

Artificial intelligence is assumed a new technology, but in reality, it is not new. The researchers in the field of AI are much older. It is said that the concept of intelligent machines was found in Greek Mythology. Below are some keystones in the development of AI:

In the year 1943, Warren McCulloch and Walter Pits proposed a model of Artificial neurons.

In the year 1950, Alan Turing published a “Computer Machinery and Intelligence” paper in which he introduced a test, known as a Turing Test. This test is used to determine intelligence in machines by checking if the machine is capable of thinking or not.

In the year 1956, for the first time, the term Artificial Intelligence was coined by the American Computer scientist John McCarthy at the Dartmouth Conference. John McCarthy is also known as the Father of AI.

In the year 1972, the first full-scale intelligent humanoid robot, WABOT1, was created in Japan.

In the year 1980, AI came with the evolution of Expert Systems. These systems are computer programs, which are designed to solve complex problems.

In the year 1997, IBM Deep Blue beat world chess champion Gary Kasparov and became the first computer to defeat a world chess champion.

In the year 2006, AI came into the business world. The world’s top companies like Facebook, Twitter, and Netflix also started using AI in their applications.

Advantages of AI

• One of the biggest benefits of Artificial Intelligence is that it can significantly reduce errors and increase accuracy and precision.

•There are many studies that show humans are productive only about 3 to 4 hours in a day. Humans also need breaks and time off to balance their work life and personal lives. But AI can work endlessly without breaks.

• Robots perform all tasks, eliminating the risk of human error and injury in hazardous environments.

•Repetitive actions can be boring for human beings, but with AI-enabled machines, they can be performed with full efficiency.

•It is very helpful in daily activities, such as Google Assistant Alexa, and other virtual assistant technology are helping to make our life easier.

•Using AI and natural language processing, chatbots can answer common questions, resolve issues, and escalate complex problems to human agents, ensuring seamless customer service around the clock.

•We all know that businesses have a customer service crew that must address the doubts and concerns of the patrons. Businesses can create a chatbot or voice bot that can answer all of their clients’ questions using AI.

Disadvantages of AI

•A big disadvantage of AI is that it cannot learn to think outside the box. AI is capable of learning over time with pre-fed data and past experiences, but cannot be creative in its approach.

•If inputs are not fed correctly to AI systems, then it may cause harmful results.

•AI applications automate the majority of tedious and repetitive tasks. Since we do not have to memorize things or solve puzzles to get the job done, we tend to use our brains less and less. This addiction to AI can cause problems for future generations.

•Machines can only complete tasks they have been developed or programmed for; if they are asked to complete anything else, they frequently fail or provide useless results, which can have significant negative effects. Thus, we are unable to make anything conventional.

Types of Artificial Intelligence

On the basis of Capability, AI can be divided into mainly three types:

  1. Narrow AI
  2. General AI
  3. Strong AI

On the basis of Functionality:

  1. Reactive Machine
  2. Limited memory
  3. Theory of mind
  4. Self Awareness Awareness
