After 13 years and diverse delays, 20th Century Studios has finally released a trailer for James Cameron’s “Avatar 2,” released on December 16. This can be the long-awaited sequel to the all-time highest-grossing film. The sequel's official title is “Avatar: The Way of Water.”

After being re-released in China last year, the primary “Avatar” surpassed “Avengers: Endgame” because the most profitable film of all time (based on ticket sales) when its global revenue exceeded $2.8 billion. Its initial run within us was unprecedented, with the film remaining in theaters for over ten months.

Many of the original film’s cast members will return for the sequel, including Zoe Saldana as Neytiri, Sigourney Weaver in a new role, and Sam Worthington as Jake Sully. Among those joining the cast are Kate Winslet as Ronal, Michelle Yeoh as Dr. Karina Mogue, and Oona Chaplin as Barang. The new film picks up where the previous one left off, with Sully and Neytiri raising their family on Pandora and fighting new threats to the planet’s burgeoning civilization.

Cameron initially stated that he hoped to release the film in 2014, but it has been pushed back seven times until its current release date later this year. The film’s production wrapped in 2020, coinciding with the release of “Avatar 3,” which is scheduled for 2024. In a December Variety Directors on Directors interview with Denis Villeneuve, Cameron revealed that he combined filming for the first two sequels plus “a little bit of ‘4.”

“We combined the schedules for ‘2,’ and ‘3’ supported the kinds of scenes and environments,” Cameron explained. “I said, let’s just treat it sort of a six-hour miniseries and move to Frankfurt just the once.” We’ll film all of the scenes from ‘2’ and ‘3’ at an identical time. That was the final theme.”

Cameron and Jon Landau are producing “Avatar 2,” with executive producers Peter M. Tobyansen and David Valdes and associate producer Brigitte Yorke.
