Because I Want To

Artwork by author, Ilis Trudie Palmer

I do it because I want to
Shoulds and ought to
no longer reside in my mind
I rolled those boulders over the edge —
that cliff of low confidence was so high,
I tried,

For so long to be the one you call
When the world was not turning in the direction you wanted it
I tried to turn it,
Greasing old hinges,
Calling in favours from those who owed me favours
I was spent,

So now when you see me
Being all hi and bésame
And how was your day, let me rub your back,
I do it because I want to
Not because I feel that I have to,
please you.
