Book Review: Sophie’s World
A philosophical journey
The book “Sophie’s World” is a beautiful trip to the past. On this trip, you will meet many philosophers starting from the Greek Ancients to the recent ones. The main role in this novel is played by a young girl. She is reached by a philosopher who then started teaching her about philosophy and the theories given by the great philosophers of all times.
Book Review
Sophie Amundsen lives in Crescent Cove. She, being very busy in the hustle and bustle of life is unaware that very soon she will set upon on a journey, a journey full of adventures, mysteries, and wonders. One day, when she is back home from school, she finds two letters in the letterbox with her name on them. Seeing her name on the letters, she went into deep thinking that who will write her a letter. After finding no one in her mind, she then opens the first letter. While reading the text “who are you?” she feels a great jerk in her body. In the second letter, she finds another very strange question “where does the world come from?” thinking about the answers, she becomes blank, unable to think as if someone has washed away all her memories.
The most annoying thing for her is being unable to find the person who is writing her these letters and the person putting them into her mailbox. While solving this mystery just after some days she finds another mail containing some handwritten notes on the history of philosophy from a philosopher Alberto Knox. Then one day she finds, that one who is putting the mail in her mailbox is not a human but is Alberto Knox’s dog “Hermes”. In this journey, Sophie becomes a student, and Alberto her teacher. Alberto teaches her about the philosophers starting from the Great Ancient philosophers such as Plato, Socrates, and Aristotle leading to Marx and Freud. Sophie who will become 15 years soon, is learning all this information about the world’s great philosophers very quickly. Day by day she is now more curious to learn more.

One mystery that is still there to be solved is that the postcards she is receiving are addressed to someone called Hilde Moeller Knag appears to be from Hilde’s father, Major Alberto Knag who is serving in Lebanon. Another funny thing is that Hilde and Sophie share the same birthdate. The question which keeps her annoying is who is Hilde, and why she is receiving her mail?
This book is written by Jostein Gaarder a well-known philosophical writer. In this novel, he tried to help people who want to learn about philosophy in a very lighter way. So, this book is a must-read for those who want to take an overview of the philosophers and their great work.
