Been reading a lot of books of late and trying to deepen my understanding of the things I like to do. In that process, came across multiple gems that I’d like to share. Some of them make you wonder why you’ve not read them much earlier.

A few ideas discussed might require expertise in the field of psychology to fully comprehend, but even if we skip those, it’s an informational ride for curious readers. Here you go,

Phantoms in the Brain

This book delves into some of the strange neurological disorders and offers profound insights into the functioning of our minds. Author Ramachandran goes through the experiences of individuals who have suffered brain injuries.

Starting with Phantom limbs syndrome, where patients observe sensations in their missing limbs, you get to know how the brain constructs reality and maps sensory information showing remarkable plasticity.

Ramachandran discusses various experiments and case studies that showcase the brain’s resilience and adaptability, offering a hopeful perspective on recovery from neurological damage. Some of the studies discussed on Capgras syndrome and the brain’s representation of body image, prove our minds are capable of deceiving themselves.

If you like this book, you might also want to read “The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat”, where similar ideas are discussed. You’d be able to connect information.

Stolen Focus

Not for you if you’re not mindlessly scrolling social media. The book explores the activities that are eroding our ability to concentrate.

The pervasive use of smartphones and social media, the constant bombardment of notifications, and the fast-paced nature of modern life have all played a role in deteriorating our sustained attention.

Data from multiple sources (including these book recommendations), can be overwhelming and makes it difficult to process and retain information effectively.

Though, we’ve not leveraged our brain’s capacity to the full, constant multitasking reduces our ability to fully concentrate on a single effort.

Author Johann Hari suggests solutions to regain our focus by mindfulness and meditation. It’s also crucial to understand the importance of digital detox discussed in the book.

Deep Work is another book of potential interest that discusses cognitive overload and maintaining the ability to focus.

Mindset: The Psychology of Success

If you don’t mind reading the phrase “Growth Mindset” over a zillion times, you won’t have trouble sifting through this book.

Stanford psychologist Carol S. Dweck offers readers an insightful exploration of how our beliefs shape our success in life.

It goes to show that our mindset — the way we perceive our abilities and potential — plays a critical role in how we approach challenges and setbacks. She categorizes mindset into two types: the fixed mindset and the growth mindset.

Individuals with a fixed mindset believe that their abilities are static traits that cannot be changed. In contrast, individuals with a growth mindset believe that their abilities and intelligence can be developed through dedication, hard work, and continuous learning.

She provides actionable insights to cultivate a growth mindset in any area of life. Do you shy away from challenges because you fear failure? Give this thought-provoking book a read and unlock your potential.

Psychology has always been an intriguing topic. Humans widened their understanding of the brain in the last century or so, it’s high time to go to the depths and transcend the limitations of our neurological understanding as we start placing chips next to the cells to capture neural activity.
