If you're like most of us, you’ve probably been dealing with some form of stress at some point in your life, whether it’s work, family, friends, or just life in general. Stress is one of the most common causes of depression, anxiety, and other mental health issues, so knowing how to cope with it can help you feel more in control of your day-to-day life.

Here are a few tips to get you through the day:

Take care of yourself. If you find yourself feeling stressed out or overwhelmed, take a deep breath and ask yourself, “Am I doing what I need to do to be happy?” If the answer is “no,” then you may want to consider taking a break from your stress-filled day.

Don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it. You don’t have to wait for someone else to tell you what’s wrong with you, but you do have the right to seek help if you are feeling overwhelmed or stressed.

Be honest with yourself and your friends and family about your feelings and what is stressing you out.

Make a list of all the things you can do right now to help yourself feel better.

If you really need it, ask your doctor or therapist for a referral to a professional who specializes in stress management.

Try to limit your exposure to stressful situations.

Find a quiet place to sit, concentrate or meditate.

Practice relaxation techniques.

Talk to someone you trust who can listen to you and give you honest advice.

Have a plan in place for how you will handle stress in the future.

Learn to recognize the signs of a stress reaction and take action to manage them.

Write down your thoughts and feelings on a piece of paper and keep them in a safe place.

Spend time with family and friends.

Check in with a trusted friend or family member to see how things are going.

Look for ways to improve your health and well-being.
