Career Choices

Oh yes, the choices we all hate taking. The one where we’re never sure whether what we are choosing is right or wrong —sadly, we’ll never know.

It all starts in your last year of high school. What do you want to do with the rest of your life? University? if so, what major? Technical school? if so, what field? Professional Athlete? Get ready to risk your entire future.

So many questions that you don’t have an answer to. You can only guess what future you would like to have. Not only that, but you also need to take into account all kinds of other factors including but not limited to the employability, salary, and work-life balance of whatever career you choose to embark on.

It is understandably a very stressful experience. So, we try to run away from making a decision as long as possible. We listen to what our parents recommend or we do or copy our friends’ decisions.

However, at some point in life, we wonder “Is this really what I want to do?”

This is why so many students end up changing majors. They realize they made a wrong decision midway; however, they might make an even worse one next. How would they know?

Many of us start feeling like we’re behind in life. Our peers are moving forward so fast and seem to be so sure about what they want from life.

So, how do we tackle this issue that most people face? Should we assign occupations at birth? should we do exactly what our parents did in ancient times? or should we take an exam at one point that determines our best-fitting role like in Divergent?

We’ve all heard of career counseling, but how well does it work? I’ve been through it. You do a personality test and they check your grades. Then, they give you the most obvious answer that you already knew; however, you don’t feel like it’s right. The science of career counseling is yet to evolve enough to be satisfactory.

Do you relate to this problem? If so, what did you do? Did it work for you? Let me know as a response.
