Born 02/12/1809 in England. His mother died when Charles was 8. His father and grandfather were scientists. He studied at the University of Edinburgh, and later at Christ’s College in Cambridge.
Graduated with a bachelor of arts, and went on the HMS Beagle’s voyage around the world, as a naturalist collecting several specimens (birds, plants, and fossils).
