Claude 2: The Free Rival To ChatGPT Plus Taking The AI World By Storm!
Unless you have been living rent-free with SpongeBob’s friend Patrick under a rock, you might’ve heard that OpenAI, the brains behind the most powerful chatbot that is the talk of the world, ChatGPT has started rolling out the Code Interpreter feature to ChatGPT Plus user. In that article I promised to talk about an alternative that is just as powerful, and the best of all- it’s free for everyone!
What is it?
What is the AI I’m about to introduce to you that is so big of a deal? The AI I’m going to talk about is Claude 2, released by Anthropic. Now you might’ve never heard of Anthropic but let me tell you, they are a MASSIVE company, considering the amount of funds they’ve managed to raise, which is a whopping 1.5 billion dollars, with Google being among the top investors. In other words, Google is challenging Microsoft in the advancement of AI technology since OpenAI is funded by Microsoft. But how much have OpenAI raised in fundings? A jaw dropping 11 billion dollars.
How to access?
Claude 2 is Anthropic’s latest large language model(LLM) with improved performance and gives longer responses. You can access this AI on the claude.ai website. It is completely free for the time being for anyone living in the UK and the US.
However, if you’re not in the UK or the US, you can fill in a country request form which you can find on their website. Another option is to use a Virtual Private Network(VPN).
The third option is to use it via Poe, which can be accessed here. Do note that you are allowed only 3 free messages per day on Poe.
How does it perform against ChatGPT?
Context size
Claude 2 is extremely smart, it scored 76.5 on the multiple choice section of the bar exam. Although it is higher than ChatGPT’s score on the bar exam, note that this is only for the multiple choice section. SInce we don’t have the numbers for ChatGPT’s score on solely the multiple choice section, we can’t really draw a direct comparison. Now here’s where Claude 2 wins over ChatGPT big time. The length of Claude 2’s input and output had been increased to 100k tokens in each prompt! 100 000! This is a significant increase compared to ChatGPT-4 which only allows users to input 4000 tokens. Tokens are like input data, the larger the amount of tokens, the more data can be input at once, meaning Claude 2 can work with hundreds of pages of documentations or even a book! It can also output larger documents such as letters or stories.

Did I mention that you can upload files for the model to analyze and read for completely free? Whereas in ChatGPT you’d have to pay 20$ per month to access that feature even though the context size is way smaller. You can upload 5 10mb of file at once, so that means a total of 50mb of data.
AI detection test passed!
Using AI to complete your homework or project? College students are doing it, university students are doing it, we’re all doing it! But we don’t want others to know that our work was AI generated. So how can Claude 2 help us? The content generated by Claude 2 is considered more human-like by AI detection tools than content from ChatGPT. Tests have been conducted using Originality.ai’s detection tool and the results are way better than ChatGPT.
Response time
What about the response time? We don’t want to use a chatbot that gives slow response. Well, I have to say that the response from Claude 2 is way faster than ChatGPT when compared side-by-side. Although this could be because of the smaller scale of users at the moment, it still looks very promising.
About Anthropic’s demo
One example in the demo video that got me absolutely excited is when a user uploads a static map and asked Claude 2 to add interactive data. It shows the data for the particular country when the user hovers their mouse over that country. It blows my mind as Claude 2 was able to find the borders of every country from just one static map.
