Over an hour and a half had passed between the time Jim had left the house with Mathias Wilson and then returned. When he rang the bell on the front gate, he did not know what he would tell his father and he was sure Burgess would only use the information to ridicule him. Yet despite his overwhelming misgivings about divulging these secrets, he felt compelled to speak to someone about them.

“Who is it?” Burgess almost bellowed through the box.

“I’m back.”

“So, MacArthur has returned.”

The gate buzzed open, and he began to take slow and diffident steps toward the front door. As before, Burgess met him at the doorway.

“So, what happened? You’ve been gone long enough.”

“I’ll tell you everything once we’re inside.”

Burgess, who was never one to allow others to derail him so easily, continued, “Well what did his eminence have to say?”

“Where’s my father?”
