Our emotions can play a vital role in our growth and progress.

Negative emotions can damage our physical and mental health and put an end to our success in life.

Positive emotions make us stronger and more productive.

Everyone of us experiences positive or negative emotions. Some of us try to find out the root cause.

Many of us find it difficult to identify the reason behind our depressed mood.

There are multiple factors that affect us in different ways. Some of them can be identified and cured. Some factors can’t be managed, or we’ve no control over.

When we wake up in the morning, we can’t leave our bed easily; we feel laziness, and we want to sleep more.

This is something we can control. We can remind ourselves about the consequences of getting late and missing our important appointments.

Similarly, when we face a lack of motivation or feel hesitation doing something important, we can stimulate ourselves by reminding ourselves of the reward we’ll get after achieving the objective.

There are numerous other situations where we can take charge of our emotions and thoughts. We can change the situation by taking action, motivating ourselves, and reminding ourselves of the reward we’ll get, or the damage we’ll suffer.

On the other hand, there are numerous occasions where we’ve had no control over the state of affairs. We are unable to face the conditions or change the circumstances.

We’re unable to change the way things go on, but we feel bad about it. We feel sullen and discouraged.

We feel heartbroken and discouraged when our favourite team loses a football match.

We feel sad and disheartened over certain developments in global politics and international relations.

These are examples of things we can’t change or control. The more we attach ourselves to such situations, the more we will suffer.

Ultimately, it will ruin our lives and careers.

Takeaways:

  • Segregate your emotions and thoughts on the basis of the effects they have on your life.
  • Nurture positive emotions and thoughts, and put off negative ones.
  • Detach yourself from things and situations that challenge your peace of mind.
  • Don’t waste your energy thinking about things and conditions you’ve no control over.
  • Never allow negative thoughts and emotions to harm your physical and mental health.
  • Don’t become a prisoner of your thoughts; instead, keep an eye on them and use them to your benefit.
  • Invest your time and energy in emotions and thoughts that provide you with positive results.

“If you don’t manage your emotions, then your emotions will manage you.”— Deborah Rozman
