Every once in a while, you come across someone who is willing to change the pattern of how something works.

I had an incredible opportunity to speak with Utkarsh, the founder of Grad Careers, a company that is aiming to change the way immigrants find jobs in the Australian market, thus ensuring that their chances of success increase.

He does not encourage students to follow the traditional path where most of us simply apply for a job and wait for the outcome. Instead, why not conduct our own research to gauge the likelihood of a company actually hiring us? Utkarsh then provides a well-thought-out strategy to the students to help them secure a job here, which, by the way, is not easy at all. Most international students would agree with me!

What started as an initiative to help network, has now grown into a business helping many students get jobs in Australia.

My key takeaways from our conversation:

👉 Cold emailing is not dead.
Utkarsh landed his first job back in 2018 after a few months of real struggle.
Following 6 months of relying on the traditional methods that most of us use, he chose to engage in cold calling and emailing. Within just two months, he secured a job that interested him. He continues to advocate this approach to his clients.
There is still significant value in cold emails and cold calls.

👉 You should be talking to people.
You should have at least one source that is bringing you knowledge. Primarily there are 3 sources from where you can get knowledge. First is the internet or desktop research. Second, external sources like books, and documentaries. And lastly, and perhaps most crucial is reaching out to people and having conversations. Having interesting conversations tends to leave a significant impact.

👉 Lead an interesting life.
This was truly refreshing to hear. Ensure you are involved in something — whether it’s a project, a sport, books, or anything else you’re passionate about. Having interesting pursuits allows you to engage in captivating conversations with others as well.

I had great fun speaking with him and gained some new perspectives.
