What’s the aim of education?

Or should we put it as, what is the role of education in our society?

Is it to prepare future citizens of this continuingly changing global society?

Or is it to change the society to fit in with the continuous global changes occurring all around.

As there is a need for learning new skills, and there is a need for changing or unlearning according to the demands of the time.

And that is what transformation is about.

Here, I am using a story from the Upanishads to demonstrate the transformative power of education.

Prajapati, the creator of the universe had three sons, Sur, the gods, Manav, the men, and Asur, the demons [1], whom He also gave education.

After finishing their education, the three sons asked Prajapati for their Deeksha, a final word of wisdom, which could be their initiation in life.

Prajapati chanted the syllable Da to each one of them, and then asked them if they understood what it meant.

The gods said, ‘Yes, you said Damayata, have self-control and asked us to be humble.
