This week we’re celebrating Danny DeVito’s 80th birthday.

Of course, he’s made many TV shows and movies. Feisty/bossy/angry short man is DeVito’s “shtick,” and he’s been playing many of the same roles for the last fifty years. While there have been some exceptions (War of the Roses, for example), he hews closely to his strengths, and he’s become very good at it. That he doesn’t stray too far too often is very telling.

DeVito was never a leading man; his dramatic turns have been mixed; he was too old and too short to have ever been an action star, and while he’s a decent comedic actor, he’s rarely been exceptional when he’s leading the cast instead of being part of an ensemble. Much of his success has come from his staying in his lane (along with his business acumen as both he and his wife Rhea Pearlman are successful producers) and there’s no reason that if he didn’t have his “shtick” that he would have never become a major performer in Hollywood.
