Do You Also Sit in the Backseat of a Cab?
Are you safe?
Sometimes, I use a cab to get to work.
This is because it saves me time & I don’t have to -
- Stress about finding a parking spot at my office.
- Deal with heavy traffic during peak congestion hours.
Since I am not driving, I can utilize my time to -
- Plan my day
- Read & respond to comments
- Think & observe surroundings
This time when I’m in the cab is like my special “Me Time” at the start of the day.
But I’m not here to tell you to be super productive or anything like that.
So, what’s the point of all this?
I came up with this story idea while simply thinking and observing things around me.
One Fine Day
I was sitting in the back of a cab, working on my tasks, while other people were rushing past us, likely on their way to the office. We were moving slowly at just 20 kilometers per hour.
I took a break from my tasks & looked out of the window…
I think something about airbags/cars was on my mind, although I wasn’t entirely sure. To give you context, in India, all cars are required to have at least two airbags as a standard safety feature.
This realization made me think about the taxi I was in and how it also had two airbags, placed at the front.
It’s interesting to consider that by default, sitting in the front of a car might be safer in case of an accident due to the presence of airbags.
However, many of us often prefer to sit in the back.
But Why?
I was thinking about why people do certain things, and I looked at my own actions to figure it out. I found some initial reasons for why people make these choices. These could be :
- Comfort and Space
I like sitting in the back because there’s more space for my legs and shoulders, and I can put my things next to me. Plus, I don’t have to wear a seatbelt, even though I know it’s for my safety. (I like to be honest & transparent). - Cultural and Social Norms
People might not feel comfortable sitting beside a driver. - Privacy and Personal Space
Some individuals value the privacy and personal space that the back seat offers.
I got interesting responses from the people on LinkedIn.
A confession — I still sit at the back while knowing this.
Where do you sit? Will you sit at the back now?
