Do You Mind?

What is a mind? Is it the same thing as my brain? Where do my words come from that enable me to scribble here on Medium? My mind? These questions pop into my mind from time to time. Here are some observations my mind came up with.

First and foremost my mind/brain appears to operate like a pinball machine. That much I know for sure. That’s why it’s called monkey mind because it often behaves like one. As soon as one thought comes careening into view, there is barely enough time to settle in before it leaps onto another branch and is on its merry way again where soon thereafter it is replaced by yet another monkey.

Unless I grab hold of it and squash it into place (also known as focus). Only then can I tell whether it’s worth examining and giving it my precious attention. Most of the time it is not.

My brain/mind is, in this way, restless and in need of constant stimulation. It is not good at keeping still. That’s probably why meditation is impossible for most people, myself included. Apart from sleeping, a coma, or anesthesia drip I am the hapless audience sometimes aghast at all the monkey hijinks going on in that circus lollapalooza inside my mind/brain. Again, this begs the question, am I in charge of generating my thoughts or…
