Does Your Book Need an Elevator Pitch?

The short answer is: YES! But, how, what, when, why…

Let’s start with why.

I was in a writer’s meeting, and they asked about my book. And I started talking about it. Eventually, I said something that made all the listeners sit back, and as I continued to speak, one of the other writers closed her ears and made a sound like she doesn’t want to hear the rest. I had ‘spoiler alert’ screaming in my head.

Clearly, I was not presenting my book very well. How could I expect people to buy it? And I gave away one of the biggest plot twists. Well, not so much a plot twist; May, the protagonist, has lived a very eventful life, but her mind chose to remember one period with such clarity that she is compelled to write it. To show how important that part is I created contrast and gave her some shocking events that her mind could have remembered but chose not to.
