Enough is enough. You’ve had it. Finally.

It’s not enough to be unhappy, of course. You need to be committed to doing something about it. And, this time, you are. From what is far more likely to be a negative catalyst — our negativity bias making unhappiness more motivating than desire — you’ve reached a tipping point.

But here be dragons.

Rarely will this be the first time you’ve considered action. No, you’ve been thinking about doing something for months. Sometimes years. Eliciting action signals escalation from either end of the emotional spectrum. Unhappiness becomes fear or mere interest ramps up to excitement. Whatever the source, your motivation at this point comes charged with a special energy.

Activation energy. Overcoming inertia is where every success story starts but when this outsized energy becomes unwieldy and inspires similarly outsized action, it’s where many more stories end.

If you haven’t had first-hand experience, we’re all at least familiar with best intentions that are channelled into restrictive diets or punishing workouts, and usually both.
