Don’t Underestimate The Power of A Good Story

Recently, I decided to sell my camera equipment that I had brought to make a few short videos.

I logged onto Facebook marketplace (which is big business where I live in Cape Town, South Africa), and uploaded some photos. I then wrote a short description and clicked publish.

Half an hour later, I was inundated with messages. It was overwhelming. I had no idea that so many people would want this camera. However, as my girlfriend pointed out, it was a crazily cheap price so anyone looking was ready to pounce.

I’m normally good in overwhelming situations but this was too much. I turned off my phone and forgot about it for the rest of the day.

I woke up feeling the same way so I continued to ignore my ever-growing inbox and hoped it would all stop soon.

Earlier that week, I had just come into some money so my girlfriend and I went out to celebrate.

There is a restaurant close to where I live that’s the best in town. We’d never eaten there before because it’s fancy and expensive and we had been saving up for a special occasion.

The restaurant lived up to its name. The meal was delicious and well worth the wait. As we walked to our car, we were happy, connected, and full-bellied.

I could barely see the person sitting with his hood up about 30m away because it was so dark. All I heard was “Andy! Is that you?”

I didn’t recognise the voice so I slowly started walking over to see who it was. As I got closer, he took his hood down and said, “It’s me, Leo.”

I don’t have any close friends called Leo so I did that awkward thing of asking who he was even though he seemed to know me so well.

“It’s Leo. I work at the shop across the road. You come in there sometimes.”

“Ahh, Leo. It’s you! Of course. Sorry man, I didn’t recognise you out of context. How you been?”

“I’m good. It’s cold out here but I’m waiting for my girlfriend to finish her shift so I’m telling myself it’s what lovers do.”
