Doubt

A villanelle poem

Photo by Luke Southern on Unsplash

I know not what pursues me
It consumes hopes and grows gloom
Know that it hears not my plea

It stalks me in endless glee
Casts shadows that spell my doom
I know not what pursues me

It feeds on a murder spree
Haunts me since I left the womb
Know that it hears not my plea

It drags me by my dead knee
Seeks to end me I presume
I know not what pursues me

Its claws honed by those ‘fore me
A writer’s killer heirloom
Know that it hears not my plea

It vows to set my soul free
I now see through its costume
I now know what pursues me
Know that I hear not its plea
