Jogging in a park, meanwhile, emerges as a viable solution for fostering communication in a relationship.

Driving through Hong’s Kong’s busy streets may seem like part of a desirable middle-class lifestyle. However, this habit of driving could be doing more than just getting couples from place to place — it might also be causing problems in their communication.

Picture this: one partner at the wheel, the other riding shotgun, a perfect setting for a heart-to-heart conversation, one might think.

But the reality is often different. The driver is fully focused, constantly dealing with traffic, navigating through crowds of cars, and watching out for pedestrians. Their mind is, quite understandably, not on the conversation but on the road. Responses to their partner’s attempts at dialogue are often just noncommittal murmurs like ‘Yes, yes,’ or ‘Alright, alright,’ without any real engagement.

This kind of lukewarm response isn’t the only problem. Driving in busy places can be stressful and sometimes makes people snap. A simple comment from the passenger might get an angry reaction if the driver is already upset about the traffic or other road users. This can make the car ride tense and uncomfortable, which isn’t great for a good chat.

Even without traffic stress, a driver’s focus on their phone for directions or on controlling the car can get in the way of talking with their passenger. Even though some people say they like to chat while driving, these conversations often aren’t that great.

So, what can couples do about this communication problem? One idea is to stop driving and start jogging together. Instead of sitting in a car, imagine running together in a park, where there’s no traffic and you can talk more easily while jogging side by side.

When jogging, there are no phone screens to look at or car controls to distract you. It’s just the two of you, keeping pace with each other and enjoying your surroundings.

Jogging together is an opportunity to reconnect, to share thoughts without the interruption of a red light or the blare of a horn. It’s a chance to listen actively and speak without being sidelined by the next traffic maneuver.

Hong Kong’s roads may be fast for getting from one place to another, but they’re not great for helping couples talk to each other.

Despite its bustling streets, Hong Kong boasts an array of accessible, shaded running trails, perfect for escaping the city’s hustle and bustle. A bit of exploring can reveal stunning running routes with incredible views. Seize the opportunity to savor some of the city’s finest natural offerings.
