Earning on Medium, Without Curation

Ok. There’s a common theory that you need to be curated to do well on Medium. And, to be brutally honest, it’s true — partly.

Curated stories are actively promoted by Medium. They’re likely to reach a much larger audience, get more reads, and consequently earn you a bit more cash.

But that’s not the only way to earn the big bucks on Medium. You can still do well without curation and today’s article will show you 2 ways in which you can achieve Medium success without curation.

1. Publications

In my opinion, this is the best way to make your story successful, without curation. If you believe your story can do well, apply to publications according to the topic of your story.

For example, if my piece was about my experiences advertising a product, one of the biggest publications I can apply to is Better Marketing. Or if I’m talking about my relationship, P.S I love you is the biggest publication in that particular topic. You can apply to publications before curation. Many beginners believe that curation is affected by publications. It’s just not true.

2. Promote Your Story

There are two ways to do this.

This first one might not really work. Its time consuming, inefficient, unreliable. The list goes on. And it’s definitely not going to achieve a high amount of views. However, if you’re new to Medium and you do want to get a few people to look at your work, you should promote it. On social media, such as Instagram and Twitter. However, most people won’t have a subscription, so you won’t get too much money. But, if they do read your article and subscribe to Medium within 30 days of seeing it, you will get paid.

P.S. You can read any Medium article for free on Twitter, so you won’t get paid for that.

The second method is via FaceBook. Not just promoting your story to your friends though. No, you need to join a Medium related FaceBook group. There are literally dozens out there. You will get paid for the people who view it from an entirely medium-based Facebook group (as they will probably all have subscriptions). This one of the best ways to promote your stories as a beginner. Obviously, as you grow on the platform, you should try to do this less and less often, to make you reads/views more natural. You can see external views and where they came from, through the stat page for your story.

Thirdly, if you’re new and you want to attract more traction for your story, share it on the ManyStories website. Basically, if ManyStories doesn’t hate your story, they’ll put in on their front page and it will be promoted to other Medium users. As most people will have paid subscriptions, you will get paid for your work. However, the demand for ManyStories is increasing, and wait times for your story to get promoted can be up to 4 weeks.

That’s about it — for now. I hope I helped you with your Medium writing journey. There are many more writing articles on the way (e.g.. How to get curated? How to get into any publication? Why Medium isn’t curating you?)
