I remember this story from my childhood — it’s a joke really: Three kids make every tutor quit the job. They simply refuse to learn anything. Whenever the tutor tries to teach them anything, they put their hands on their ears. Annoyed, the tutor quits. Then a clever tutor thinks about gamifying their studies. She brings colorful sweets with her and gives them six candies, two for each. Then she asks the youngest boy, “If I gave you one more candy, how many will you have?” the boy starts thinking. The eldest girl blurts out, “Don’t tell her. She is trying to teach you math.”

That is the idea.

You must tell your readers things by handing them candies and then planting some information here and there. But you have to solve this problem: how long can you keep them engaged before they think you are trying to teach them.

The readers on Medium are mostly learners. They want to learn. But they want to learn in a way that doesn’t make them burdened in any way. Most of them love Medium because writers like Tim Denning and Darius Foroux can teach them things without getting on their nerves.
