What is EMP? Why should I care? What will happen if one occurs?

Ever stop and wonder…without electricity how would life change? Do you realize that without electricity life would be harder, things would take much longer to do, and parts of your life may be intolerable?

An electromagnetic pulse or EMP is a brief burst of electromagnetic energy. The origin can be natural or artificial. An electromagnetic field, an electric field, a magnetic field, or a conducted electric current. Electromagnetic pulse — Wikipedia

An EMP could devastate a modern city. Airports, hospitals, banks, water, food, very few aspects of life would be unaffected. An EMP could take them all out at once and keep them out for weeks or months.

Money

Cash and coin, pixelated digits stored away in a bank’s computer server. An EMP power outage would wipe out the digits. With the power out during an EMP, nobody would be able to withdraw or transfer funds from a bank account. Most stores would only take cash, so people better have enough of that on hand to make purchases such as food or drink.
