Equal Opportunity Doesn’t Exist

There are many people who push against the idea of equality of outcome. It feels unfair, right? You see someone, who simply through dint of birth, is being moved into a better position. What happened to equality of opportunity? People should succeed or fail on their own merits, right?

In a fair world, that would be precisely how it worked. There’s the rub though, isn’t it? We don’t live in a fair world. We live in a world of haves and have-nots. With different variations and mixes of that sprinkled in all throughout. Most people are born with a mix of advantages and disadvantages. Some lean heavily in one direction or another.

What’s important though is that certain advantages and disadvantages far outweigh others. Being born into a rich family is a tremendous advantage, just as being born poor is a tremendous disadvantage. The power of these is truly based on the fact that these aren’t singular. Being born rich comes with a multitude of advantages. Being born poor comes with a multitude of disadvantages.

I’ve always been a big equal opportunity kind of guy. Never a big fan of the idea of equal outcome. If two people work equally hard, they should be able to reach the same goal. If someone slacks off, they won’t reach it. If someone works even harder, they’ll achieve…
