The longer Russia’s invasion and assault on Ukraine goes on, the further it fades from limelight, with political assassinations, economic crises, and the Supreme Court decisions in the US giving people even more cause for concern.

Yet the war rages on, with it’s own political assassinations, it’s own economic crisis and it’s own assault on women and children’s rights.

In the midst of all this, independent conflict journalist Jake Hanrahan’s (aka Popular Front) has released a documentary on a group of friends from an old anti-fascist soccer hooligan firm preparing to deploy to the fight in the East of the country. Unfortunately Youtube has demonitized the video, presumably due to the vulgar language and scenes of violence, but this video should be watched by everyone for a different, humane yet raw side of the war.

Here is why you should watch this documentary

  1. Whether you agree with their pre-war past-time or not, there is something relatable and heartening about a group friends hanging out together, training together and just being young men, despite the terrible situation hanging over them
  2. A glimpse into the surreality of life in Kyiv as a war rages in the country, but far away from the city for now.
  3. The answer to Hanrahan’s question on how they feel about fighting alongside their Ukrainian fascist rivals (hint; political differences melt away pretty fast when faced with an existential genocidal threat)
  4. The elderly woman near the end, first comically play-acting the sounds of an air strike, then capturing the tragic poignancy of the whole situation in almost unbearably simple words.

…for what?
