Man asleep on pillow. Has mouth wide open. Bottle labelled “Sweet Dreams” is hovering in air above him, pouring little books into his open mouth. Also above him: a chainsaw cutting a log, a saw sawing a log, and a little sheep jumping over a book.

Any other bedtime readers out there??

I’ve always got books on my nightstand. Kindle? Kindle schmindle! — I mean books you have to open and turn the pages. When I doze off and knock over the reading lamp, it’s time to quit reading and hit the hay.

I found myself wondering if there are any famous books that mention sleep. Yes, indeed — and some not so famous. I knew you’d be interested, so I’ve compiled some excerpts. Enjoy! I’ll say good night now… 😴

“Hobbits do not like heights, and do not sleep upstairs, even when they have any stairs.”
— J.R.R. Tolkien, The Fellowship of the Ring

“To die, to sleep — to sleep, perchance to dream — ay, there’s the rub, for in this sleep of death what dreams may come…”
— William Shakespeare, Hamlet

“What was sleep, after all, but the process by which we dumped our insanity into a dark subconscious pit and came out on the other side ready to eat cereal instead of our neighbor’s children?”
— Jeff Lindsay, Darkly Dreaming Dexter
