Food Banks Affected by Cuts
I know firsthand what these cuts mean
I’m fortunate that I don’t have to rely on food banks for food for myself or my family.
However, I know “up close and personal” what that means to people in my neighborhood who count on food banks for their survival.
Why? I volunteer at a local food bank. Food banks serve a wide range of individuals, including seniors, single mothers, low-income workers, and people on social assistance. In my community, I see individuals and families who need this assistance for many reasons.
Food banks play a key role in making our food system stronger. They help provide a local food source for communities and, especially during tough times, make sure fewer people go hungry. Food banks also help reduce waste by redistributing food to those in need.
· Lost jobs
· Illness that forces them to stop working and have no income
· Accidents that left them unable to care for themselves and no family
· Some food banks also offer nutritional education, job training, and assistance with dietary needs.
Other things food banks do is use much of the produce that would go to waste to get distributed through food banks.
