Dear Reader,

Welcome aboard! I’d like to share the story of one of the first railroads in Florida. This railroad was around during the Civil War. Folks in those days had trouble moving heavy loads, especially in Middle Florida.

The railroad started out operating with mules and horses and wagons, they did not own locomotives. Then they bought locomotives but were unable to operate them because of the poor condition of the track. Come learn how all of this went and the rest of the history of the Tallahassee Railroad.

Introduction

This railroad was headquartered in Tallahassee, Florida. It was one of the first railroads in Florida. It began operating in 1836 or 1837. Some people said it was 1836 while others said it was 1837.

For the first 20 years of business, this railroad used trains being pulled by mules. Steam locomotives began being used here in 1855. The railroad was used to carry cotton bales from Tallahassee to seaports on Saint Marks River.
