How the Founder of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) Almost Screwed Up on His Deathbed
You can break a habit, but you’re unlikely to forget it. — James Clear
Bill Wilson was the founder of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), a 12-step program for recovering alcoholics. He founded the most successful community-based self-help group of all time.
AA is an international organization where groups meet regularly to support one another. Although not for everyone, millions attribute their success to sobriety because of this organization.
In 2020 AA estimated its membership worldwide to be over two million, 75% of which are members from the US and Canada.
Who was Bill Wilson
Bill Wilson was born in 1895 in East Dorset, Vermont. Sadly, both his parents left him and his sister. Their father went on a business trip and never came back, while the mother left Vermont to finish her studies.
He and his sister grew up with their grandparents. He never showed interest in his education and was rebellious against authority.
In 1913, Wilson enlisted in the U.S. Army and served during World War I. He was exposed to the horrors of war and alcohol.
