How do you define wealth? For me, it’s the freedom to be happy. Freedom from being tied to an office until my official retirement age.
To me, wealth is doing what I want, when I want, within reason — that doesn’t include flying a private jet around the world, but it does include being able to do work I enjoy and then go for a walk whenever I want to.
To achieve this kind of wealth, I’ve had to make sacrifices, because I’ve never earnt a huge income. Here are four of the sacrifices I’ve made.
I’ve never tried to keep up with people around me
As a kid, I was desperate to keep up with my peers. But I had a tough lesson to learn. I never kept up. I never got started most of the time. Because my parents said ‘no’. It was painful, but it taught me a lesson.
Because my parents never spent a lot of money, we had the biggest house, with the nicest garden. We stayed in nice hotels when we went on holiday. My dad was a keen investor in the stock market.
