There are plenty of website building tools out there, such as SquareSpace, Wix, and GoDaddy. But none of them are as easy, and certainly not as well, free, as Google Sites.

Google Sites began back in 2006, when Google acquired the tool from JotSpot, but like many Google products, it went through many changes and iterations. In 2016, Google introduced a completely new version of the platform and has developed into what it is today. They continue to add new features.

You can’t get started with Google Sites by going to the standard Google Apps icon in the upper right of most Google apps. I expect it will be there someday, but for now, just go to sites.google.com. If you are one of the 3 or 4 people without a Google account, now is the time to register for one. Anyone who has a Gmail account, an Android phone, or uses any of the other Google apps.

Google Sites isn’t the most sophisticated web builder, but it is probably the easiest, sort of. There are things I would expect it to do that it doesn’t and changing some things requires more work than I think it should. But I’ve been building websites since the web was…
