Before retiring from a long, fulfilling career, I discovered a powerful secret. When applied correctly, it can make your job more secure than ever. By using it, you will never worry about employment again! Before divulging the secret, let’s first lay down a crucial part of its foundation.

How do you view your job?

Do you enjoy your work? If not, why? If you don’t, what’s your plan to find work you can enjoy? Life is too short to stay in a job you hate. Could a shift in perspective help you like it more?

Years ago, I went from owning part of a company to becoming an employee after we sold to a multinational organization. Initially, my ego resisted the transition. But I promised myself to make it work. I adjusted my mindset, let go of my bruised pride, and discovered two incredible years ahead — not because my role changed, but because I did.

Life is like that, isn’t it? Trying to change the world without first changing ourselves will rarely work. As Daisaku Ikeda wisely stated, “When we change, the world changes.”

The secret

The secret I uncovered during that career shift became invaluable to me and those I have coached since. It’s something every self-employed person understands, but almost every corporate employee overlooks. It is simply knowing your personal return on investment (ROI). With this number in hand, you find your bottom line value to the company, which extends beyond mere relationships.

Unless you uncover your personal ROI, how can you know how much value you add and whether you are even worth being employed? Without it, your contribution is determined subjectively, meaning your employment is only based on what someone else thinks of you.
