Haiku for a Summer’s Evening

Where are the bright lights
that promised love and laughter?
The fireflies are gone.
Mosquito whining
in the dark well of my ear.
Quick! Slap it away!
The Katydid pleads
Katie did I? Did I not?
Summer shrugs and smiles.
Creaky old cricket
hiding in the uncut grass —
How you ease my heart.
