Harness your mind to heal your gut
A personal experience of how mind-based therapies support gut healing
About a year ago, as I met my doctor to discuss a treatment plan for gut issues, arthritis, and fatigue, he suggested a strategy no doctor had before: to use my mind as an ally in healing my body.
The approach we agreed on would address both the hardware and software of my body, so to speak. To heal the hardware, we would focus on healing my gut and its ability to digest and assimilate nutrients. To reprogram the software, we would work directly with my nervous system and alter the commands it sent to my body.
After all, our minds have tremendous influence over how our bodies function.
Our nervous system regulates how we perceive and respond to stress, which dramatically impacts our hormones, adrenal function, and digestion. Emerging research also shows that techniques like hypnosis can alter the communication between the nervous system and gut and restore function in disorders such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS).
