Imagine being blind and suddenly having sight — everything changes. A powerful insight, an “aha” moment, is similar. Ready to unlock a new way of seeing? Read on!

The blind leading the blind and sighted

Who better to teach us about insight than those who cannot see with their eyes yet perceive more than many who can? Helen Keller exemplified this ability, proving true vision goes beyond eyesight alone. Some claim she was the “blind leading the blind and sighted.” A well-known quote of hers is, “The only thing worse than being blind is having sight but no vision.”

Despite being both blind and deaf from 19 months old, Keller achieved far more than most with eyesight and hearing. Here are just a few of her accomplishments:

  • The first deaf and blind person to earn a bachelor’s degree.
  • Author of 12 books
  • Prominent political and social activist
  • Leading member of the American Foundation for the Blind
  • World-renown speaker
  • Recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom (1964)
  • Named one of Time Magazine’s most influential people of the 20th century
  • A global symbol of resilience and inspiration

This list barely scratches the surface. If Keller, despite her immense challenges, could achieve so much, imagine what you can do with the right mindset. To learn more, read her autobiography, The Story of My Life (1903).

What is insight

According to Oxford Languages, insight is “the capacity to gain an accurate and deep intuitive understanding of a person or thing.” Since understanding is virtually limitless, so is the potential to deepen it. Whether it’s people like your spouse, historical figures, or even yourself — or subjects like psychology or engineering, insight is a tool for transformation.

The beauty of the human mind is its ability to grow in understanding over time. But how do we cultivate it?

Make it personal
