What are black pepper and its history?
Piper, the pepper plant, belongs to the family of the so-called Piperaceae. There are over 1500 species of the family of pepper plants globally. Pepper grows mainly in the understory of tropical forests as vines, shrubs, or small trees. The fruit is the peppercorn. It has the size of a small pea.
Today’s most used pepper specie is black pepper, piper nigrum, followed by the long pepper, piper longum. Pepper is found in food already around 9000–7500 BC.
