Jack* had so much to do at work. It’s been hectic! Days have turned to weeks and weeks to months. Amidst his busy schedule, Jack has developed a new habit that could cost him so much in the long run.

Lately, he’s been delaying answering the call to nature. Because of his busy schedule, he feels nature’s call can be answered much later. So, he would rather hold the urine in his bladder till he’s done with his daily work.

Is this a good decision? Well, reasoning on the consequences of this decision makes it not a perfect go-to option.

Some situations could make you hold your urine for some time. But holding your urine for too long is bad for your bladder. Here are some reasons why:

Urinary Tract Infections Can Buildup

Research shows that holding urine for too long is dangerous to your health. According to Healthline, you could be at risk of infection or kidney disease when you hold urine for too long.

Other diseases like an enlarged prostate and inability to retain urine can also result. Failure to empty your bladder allows bacteria to multiply, and this can lead to urinary tract infections in your bladder.

Research further shows that you could have pains while urinating, which is one of the symptoms of UTI (Urinary Tract Infection). There could also be the presence of blood in the urine. Pelvic pain could also result, most especially in women.

Bladder Muscles Could Weaken

Research shows that holding urine for too long can weaken the bladder muscles. According to Medical News Today, retaining urine for too long can damage the pelvic wall muscles.

Damage to the urethral sphincter can lead to urinary incontinence. This pathological condition refers to the leakage of urine involuntarily. It’s essential to consult your medical practitioner when signs and symptoms of such start.

Bladder Discomfort

Have you ever noticed that when you hold urine for a long time, you feel uncomfortable when you urinate?

When you resist the urge to urinate but instead decide to hold the urine for some time, your bladder or kidney may experience some discomfort when you urinate.

You may experience some pain and pelvic cramps.

Final Thoughts

It does more harm than good when you resist the urge to urinate but decide to hold that urine. Think about your bladder. Think about your kidneys and make the right decision.
