Ihave lived in Australia for about two months now and love it, but it feels different. Even when you live in a big city like Sydney as I do, it’s not the same as every other big city in any other country. It feels more down to earth and slowed down. But what is it that the Australians do differently, and what can we all learn from their way of life?

These are the things we all should adapt to our daily lives to make our existence more worth living, and us hopefully to better humans:

  • A “no worries” attitude
The Australians are very chilled and slowed down people. There is no hurry, everybody looks like they are about to have a wonderful day on the beach. Another thing everyone is very relaxed about is the wildlife, yes all of those animals that can kill you in an instant. The whole world freaks out about all those spiders, snakes, sharks, crocodiles, jellyfish, …, but in Australia you see the people walking barefoot or in thongs (Aussie slang for Flip-flops) and shorts as if there is nothing to be afraid of.
I really believe we all could be a little bit more relaxed, so we can focus on more important things in our lives. I’m sure that will make all our lives easier and more worth living.
  • Protect our environment
Australians have a deep understanding and connection with their environment. The big cities are very clean compared to big cities in other countries and that is because Australians take care of their surroundings. They understand what a great gift they got from Mother Nature and really appreciate and celebrate it by protecting it.
That is another lesson the Australian way of life has taught us and we really should adopt it all around the world. Our nature is a gift and by living with it in perfect harmony we will find harmony with ourselves as well.
  • A spirit of friendship
For Aussies, a stranger is just a mate you haven’t met. Being greeted on the street with a lovely “g’day mate”, being complimented on an outfit, or having a conversation with a complete stranger about the weather or sports on the bus is the most natural thing in Australia. Australians are open-minded and pride themselves on being good friends and neighbors. This Mateship is one of those things that define the Aussie spirit.
Being open-minded and treating strangers like friends is something humanity really needs. In a society where nobody is a stranger, no one will ever feel alone. I believe that will improve all our lives and we could grow as people, together.
  • A love of spending time in nature
As mentioned before, Australia is blessed with great nature. Countless beaches, impressive mountains, beautiful coral reefs, and fascinating desserts are just a few of the great variety of nature’s gifts. Without a doubt, it can be said that Australians celebrate every single one of those gifts. A barbie (Aussie slang for BBQ) on the beach, a sunset surf session, a bushwalk, or a walk through one of the countless parks on the way back home from work are just a few of all the delightful ways nature is celebrated in Australia.
Nature is one of the most important things for our wellbeing and therefore we all should follow the example of the Australians and spend more time outdoors. We would soon feel the benefits for our mind and body.
  • Coming together over food and drinks
We all know that socializing is important for our mental well-being and Australians are great at it. They just love to meet and have a barbie whenever possible. A barbie on the beach at Christmas with the whole family is just one of many great traditions for Australian families. But Australia is lucky, they have a wide range of fruits and vegetables grown in their country. They have great wine regions and top-class restaurants. I mean, what can give you more joy than a great meal with a bottle of Aussie wine in a beachside restaurant at sunset?
Consuming quality drinks and food with people you love is one of the greatest treats in life. We all deserve to treat ourselves sometimes and gather strength for the challenges we are about to face.

I can definitely say that I grew as a person by adopting some of those easy habits the Aussie way of life brings with it. I found peace with myself, my mental health improved and I feel healthier than ever.

You can adapt these habits wherever you are and you really should. You will soon feel the changes and you will walk through life hopping like a kangaroo.
