It was like any other day, I was reading my newspaper, I usually like reading the newspaper somewhat as shown in the picture!

When I turned the 1st page, I felt something has fallen on my feet, which was hanging alongside the bed! I, without seeing it, picked it up, remain stunned!

It was a 2000₹ note dropped from the newspaper! I couldn’t even imagine how I can be so lucky at the start of the morning! ( Yeah I am an unlucky potato)

At the very next second when I flipped it, it was blank! With some flower designs only!

What was it then!?

It was actually an advertisement for an outlet in my locality!

This tremendous idea of advertising made me smile!

And an Instant thought of Clickbait got stuck in my mind. How often we use the word ‘Clickbait’ in the digital space!

Derek Mueller from Veritasium Explained the Importance of Clickbait in Today’s Digital Space

When I started on this platform, some 10 years ago, clickbait was less important. Subscribers were what mattered because most of the views came from the sub-feed and videos went viral usually by getting a lot of attention elsewhere, like on Reddit or Facebook, not due to the YouTube algorithm.

More Subscribers More Views

YouTube realized that to give the best experience for the viewer, it needed to make YouTube a destination in itself. They wanted people to come to YouTube, and see videos that interested them, they had to decrease the importance of subscribers, and more like Reddit, where stuff with the most engagement rises to the top.

More Engagement More Views

Ideally, get sucked down the YouTube rabbit hole and spend hours on the site without even noticing it. The ultimate resource is people’s time and attention, and every platform is trying to capture as much of it as possible.

But that necessarily meant increasing the importance of Clickbait!

I thought Clickbait was just limited to digital space, but when I was Confronted with this currency note advertisement I was surprised that now It has also entered the physical space. Not as Clickbait but as Attention Bait!

It’s however interesting to know that our attention is what actually gets traded!

Beware!
