For the people who are new here and can’t wait to cross the 100 follower mark so they can get accepted into the partner program, I know it can be overwhelming.

Who doesn’t love to get paid for writing?

It isn’t easy, but not impossible.

With a few tips and guidance, you can grow your followers on Medium from day one. The only requirement is to follow the right path, just like I did.

I restarted my Medium journey in mid-January and since then, there has been no turning back.

With the hope of creating a hold on this platform and building an audience, I started writing articles regularly. Two months later, I have 340 followers (as I write this article) and over 18K views in total.

The best part is that out of 340 followers, I gained 214 followers alone last month. I remember when I started writing again on Medium, I had 3 followers. But now things are different.

Here are a few tips that I used to gain 200+ followers in one month.

Write what you are good at

It’s quite easy to get carried away with copying other people’s content.

You might think that if this topic worked for them and brought in 100K views, it’ll do the same for you. But that’s not the case.

You should only write about what you are good at.

For instance, I write about SEO and stuff that I learned from my experience of running a blog for two years. If you have something to share with people from your experiences, don’t hesitate to do that. People love to hear about others’ experiences.

So whatever you plan to write on, write what you are good at and can elaborate for hours without losing patience.

Aim to publish your work in publications

While starting out as a beginner, aim for publishing at least two of your pieces a week in Medium publications.

Medium publications can be a great way to reach a larger audience base rather than self-publishing. If you can, aim for publications with followers above 1K.

You might get rejected during the process but don’t lose hope. Learn from your mistakes and pitch again.

I was rejected three times by Better Marketing, which has over 100K followers, before getting my first piece published. And trust me, that article was the first step to building my audience on this platform.

Hence, try to publish your articles in publications as much as you can.

Write regularly

Lastly, be consistent.

No matter which platform you are trying to build your audience on, if you aren’t regular, nothing is going to work.

I aim to publish at least four articles a week.

Being consistent doesn’t mean you have to write every day. Publish according to your schedule, but be regular.

Don’t be a fool who publishes 20 articles in a month and then disappears for the rest of the year.

Instead, be a wise person who publishes 3 articles every week.
